March 10, 2020Top Finishing Manufacturers in the Aerospace Industry
March 14, 2020Cars say a lot about consumers. The trends we see every year can tell manufacturers and retailers much about the buying habits of key demographics, as well as the physical attributes that make customers more likely to buy. Even details as nominal as paint choice can tell us about what buyers want, and what they value in the automotive industry.
According to the BASF Color Report for Automotive OEM Coatings, 39% of all cars built worldwide last year were painted white. While white is the most popular color across the globe, there are very noticable differences in how popular it is in different regions. In Asia, almost every other car is white, however, that number drops to only about a third of cars in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Other colors such as black, silver, and grey are also popular. Together these colors coat 39% of cars put out in 2019. This trend also counts for the most popular car segment, which is the SUV. However, the world isn’t this clear cut when it comes to car colors. According to BASF, the other 22% of the world’s new vehicles were painted with achromatic colors, with 7% being blue and 7% being red.
Interestingly enough, subcompacts and smaller vehicles are more likely to have other less common colors on them. BASF says that beige and brown are starting to become more popular especially in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa). In this region, 77% of cars are colored with achromatic colors. This means that the popularity of white, black, grey, and silver are lower in these areas.
Why might beige and brown be gaining popularity like they are? According to Mark Gutjahr, “The need for softer and approachable surfaces results in the growing popularity of beige color spaces – but they have to be modern and appealing to be accepted by the end consumer. In North America, achromatic colors dominate the market, which follows global trends. However, the colors are more evenly distributed, with white only making up 29% of cars in North America.
