June 16, 2020Parts finishing is an essential part of manufacturing, as it allows for the polish and precision of the parts that is needed in many industries. A common finishing process is to run the parts through a machine that rubs them against a media in order to remove anomalies, clean edges, and de-grease the parts. Depending on the parts being finished, various kinds of media can be used to achieve the best finishing possible. At Mikro Industrial Finishing, we carry many different kinds of tumbling media to fit any industry and situation.
Tumbling Media for Heavy Parts
Some parts are heavy and hard, such as those made from steel and other tough metals. For the finishing process of these kinds of parts, we recommend using heavier media as well. In particular, ceramic and steel are excellent choices for being able to cut the anomalies off of tough parts, without damaging them in the process. Porcelain media can also be used on heavy parts, though its purpose is a little bit different. Porcelain is great for polishing metal when used in a finishing machine and can be used with softer media as well to achieve this effect.
Tumbling Media for Softer Parts
If you are looking to finish smaller and more fragile parts, you’ll want to use a softer tumbling media with them. In particular, plastic and wood pegs make great media for tumbling softer parts as they are much less likely to damage any of the parts. In these situations as well, smaller media may be a good idea, although it will likely need to correlate with the size of the parts being finished. Additionally, we also carry other forms of tumbling media to match more specific processes, including dry shells, loose abrasive and cob meal.
