Deburring Services

Deburring refers to the various methods of removing burrs from materials or parts. Burrs are the rough edges or protrusions caused by residue from the part production. These burrs can cause a lot of problems for the manufacturing industry if they are not properly handled. They not only make the parts lose their aesthetic appeal, but they also pose an injury risk to workers. Through deburring, manufacturers can have better control of their equipment and processes.

Benefits of Deburring

Some benefits of deburring include:

  • It results in higher-quality finishes.
  • It improved the performance of the part.
  • It promotes adhesion.
  • It provides a more aesthetically pleasing surface appearance.
  • It reduces the assembly time of parts.
  • It reduces surface roughness.
  • It improves the consistency and edge quality of parts.

Methods of Deburring

Deburring can be performed using several methods. The method you use will depend on the kind of burr. Sometimes, you might need to use different methods of deburring to successfully remove burrs.

Here are 4 common deburring methods:

Manual Deburring

This type of deburring involves the use of hand tools that are made up of a curved hook-shaped edge. This edge scrapes off the burrs from the workpiece or part. This process is easy to conduct, but it’s so slow and time-consuming and cannot be used to deburr large quantities of materials. There are different types of manual deburring like brushing, sheet metal edging, etc.

Thermal Deburring

This method of deburring is ideal for burrs located in areas that are hard to reach and it targets multiple surfaces at the same time. It is a fast-paced energy method that uses heat and combustible gases to create thermal energy and shockwaves that vaporize the burrs and eventually scale them out of the metal.

Tumbling

Tumbling is a mechanical deburring method and it is a mass finishing option. This means that it can be used to deburr large quantities of material simultaneously. It is carried out by placing unfinished parts into a vibratory tub or bowl, along with media that rubs against the parts. With the vibratory action, the media grinds against the surface of the parts and creates a smooth, deburred finish. This process is fast, cost-effective, and efficient in that it can deburr multiple parts at the same time. This is why it is the most preferred method of deburring.

Electrochemical Deburring

Electrochemical deburring uses a process known as anodic metal dissolution to get rid of burrs. This process is highly accurate and can deburr very challenging metals, however, it also makes use of harmful chemicals so it’s not the most environmentally friendly option.
